How these rankings work

Every ranking uses the same set of banks: the largest FDIC-insured banks by total assets plus banks that left that group since 2016, each ranked only for the quarters it reported. Ratios such as the CET1 ratio or return on equity compare banks of very different sizes on equal terms; dollar rankings such as total assets mostly reflect size. Where a lower value is safer, as for noncurrent loans, net charge-offs and the efficiency ratio, the lowest value ranks first. A rank is a position in a table, not a rating of a bank.
