RGE's Q1 2010 Outlook

The exit from recession in the second half of 2009, which follows five quarters of negative growth, and the resumption in world growth, has led RGE and others to revise upward forecasts for eurozone growth. The flow of recent hard data, however, confirms the eurozone’s position as growth laggard among advanced economies. Nordic economies, with the exception of Iceland, will return to growth in 2010. All Nordics except Iceland were in a favourable fiscal position to cushion their contractions, but quarterly public consumption growth in Norway was by far the largest during the first three quarters of 2009. EU newcomers in Central Europe—the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia (the so-called CE-4)—are on distinctive growth paths. The global crisis hit all four economies hard, depressing exports and prompting a dramatic downshift in capital inflows, but some proved more resilient than others. The pace of contraction in South East Europe, with the exception of Bulgaria, has slowed in recent months, but the recovery will be slow and fragile.
